Two groups of people had a providential escape from death in Khammam and Adilabad districts

Heavy rain lashed different parts of the State on Sunday throwing normal life out of gear. Two groups of people had a providential escape from death in Khammam and Adilabad districts.

In Khammam district, timely intervention by the police and fire department personnel saved the lives of K. Praveen (22), site engineer, D. Kiran (27) and Ch. Somi Reddy (52) both site supervisors, who were stuck in floodwater at Jalimudi irrigation project construction site in Madhira mandal. They were trapped in the makeshift tents as the floodwater engulfed the worksite.

On being alerted by villagers, a police team led by Wyra DSP Bhukya Ram Reddy rushed to the site and, in an operation that lasted over three hours, rescued the trio with the help of personnel from Fire and Emergency Services . The site engineer hails from Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh. Similarly, passengers of a Mancherial-bound RTC bus had a close shave as a huge boulder fell on the road just seconds before the bus reached the spot on NH 44. The bumper of the bus was damaged while the passengers escaped unhurt.

The rain put all the hill streams in the district into spate, some of them disrupting traffic. Kukda, Somini, Kushinepalli, Somini, Moogavelli, Susmir, Ambagutta, Korchagutta, Nupalli, Koyapalli, Ippalguda, Yerraguda and Rechini villages remained cut off due to heavy rain.

Meanwhile, the Met Department forecast heavy rain at several places across Telangana in next 24 hours, particularly in Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Nalgonda and Khammam districts. The depression over the Bay of Bengal moved north-westwards and crossed the south Odisha coast on Sunday morning.
